A ROE DEER HIT BY A VEHICLE CAN RETURN TO THE WILD THANKS TO OUR TEAMS’ QUICK RESPONSE

The report and the scene

Following a report of a collision on a regional road in Haaltert, ADT found a roe deer in a ditch with a dislocated hip. Despite the impact, the animal had no open wounds or fractures, but it did require immediate and extremely careful handling to prevent further pain or aggravation of its injuries.

Care and rapid recovery

The teams carefully stabilised the roe deer and transferred it to VOC SOS Wilde Dieren. In a quiet, dark stable, the animal received the necessary veterinary care and, surprisingly, was able to stand again after just a few hours. We suspect that the collision itself was relatively minor, but that the animal sustained its injuries after misjudging the depth of the ditch.

Successful release

Thanks to this prompt medical care and an additional day of observation, the roe deer’s condition improved sufficiently. The following day, it was successfully released back into its natural habitat in the same region, thanks to the excellent cooperation between all parties involved.
