Rescue of an Impaled Roe Deer in Namur: A Beautiful Example of Inter-Service Collaboration

Our Animal Disaster Team (ADT) was called in for an unusual operation right in the heart of Namur. A young roe buck (male deer) had impaled himself on a fence, requiring urgent and delicate intervention.

Following an emergency call from the NAGE Fire and Rescue Zone, our teams arrived on the scene. By the time we got there, the firefighters had already carefully extracted the animal, preventing any worsening of its injuries. Their swift and methodical response helped minimize the deer’s suffering and secure the area.

To ensure immediate care, a veterinarian from VUSC also joined the operation. She was able to examine the roe deer on site, clean, and suture a significant tear caused by the accident. This injury will require a period of rest and observation to ensure full recovery.

The animal was then carefully transported by our team to the CREAVES center in Perwez. This specialized wildlife rehabilitation center will provide the roe buck with a calm, secure, and adapted environment for its recovery, far from the stress and dangers of an urban setting.

This rescue perfectly illustrates what effective inter-service collaboration can achieve. We extend our heartfelt thanks to:

  • The firefighters of the NAGE zone for their professionalism,
  • The on-site veterinarian for her responsiveness and dedication,
  • And the CREAVES center in Perwez for their swift reception and high-quality care.
