MARE RESCUED FROM LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION AFTER STORM IN GOUY-LEZ-PIÉTON

Following an emergency call, the Animal Disaster Team (ADT) was recently dispatched to Gouy-Lez-Piéton, where a mare was in critical condition and in urgent need of help. Thanks to the close cooperation between the rescue team and a veterinarian, the operation ended on a positive note.

Trapped in a natural hazard

The situation on site was extremely serious. The mare was hopelessly trapped between the steep banks of a narrow stream. To make matters worse, a large fallen branch had pinned her down, preventing her from escaping.

After struggling desperately to free herself, the exhausted mare had also suffered a rectal prolapse. By the time the rescue team arrived, she had reached the limits of her strength.

The rescue – and the necessary effort that followed

The rescuers immediately assessed the situation together with the attending veterinarian to determine the safest and most effective way to free the animal as quickly as possible.

But once the mare had been pulled out of the water, the hardest part was not over. Exhausted after being trapped for hours, she was unable to stand on her own. For several minutes, rescuers took turns supporting her weight, keeping her calm and encouraging her step by step to get back onto her feet.

After a long and demanding effort, the moment everyone had been hoping for finally arrived. Slowly but surely, the mare regained her strength, stood up and was once again able to remain standing on her own - a tremendous relief for everyone involved.

Veterinary care

A veterinary examination revealed that the mare had suffered a minor tear to her rectum as a result of the accident, requiring careful medical follow-up. The Animal Disaster Team then safely transported her to a specialised veterinary clinic, where she is now receiving the best possible care.
